After graduating from college, Haley Self-Tumlin struggled to find a balance between work and her personal life. She moved to Huntsville, Alabama, to follow a job opportunity in engineering; amid her adjustment to a new job and city, she lacked much time for physical activity and began to gain weight. Feeling insecure about her size and recognizing her need to get in shape, she joined her local gym to take Zumba classes, as she had danced in high school and missed the hobby. There, she met Saul Robinson, who acted as her personal trainer and inspired her to join The 15 Day Challenge.

Along with taking three-mile walks around her neighborhood, she tried a variety of classes at the gym, including Zumba classes, sessions with her coach, and even kickboxing classes. She built a consistent routine of going to the gym, pushing herself to work out even on busy days. Additionally, she began to track her calories to help her diet adapt to her new physical routine. She lessened the meat in her diet and began to consume less carbs and greasy food, eating more fruits and vegetables and cooking for herself rather than going out to eat. By the end of her first challenge, she had lost a total of four pounds.

Despite splitting her focus between her full-time job, going back to school, and making time for self-care, Self-Tumlin remained disciplined throughout her challenge, working to make “less excuses” to avoid healthy habits and embracing them instead. “After this challenge, I feel like I’ve developed GOOD habits instead of the bad ones I’ve been feeding the last few years, and I’m loving it,” she said. Her determination instilled in her a sense of self-confidence and drive to keep pursuing new goals.

Seeing her visual progress in the photos she took throughout her journey reminded Self-Tumlin of all she was capable of. “You have to look at it as long-term improvement, and even if this hasn’t been long-term, it’s inspiring to my future growth,” she said. “If this is what I did in two weeks, imagine what I could do in two months. I feel like nothing can stop me from continuing this healthy lifestyle long-term. This challenge showed me I’m capable of a much healthier lifestyle than I thought was possible.”
