About seven years ago, Yvonne Onwuazor and her family relocated from Nigeria to Maryland. After spending about five months with a family relative, she was told to find someplace else to stay. Soon after, she and her four boys found themselves homeless. As a single mother trying to find a home for her family and working three jobs just to make ends meet, stress held a firm grip on her life, taking a toll on her both physically and mentally.
Around that time, Onwuazor experienced panic attacks so severe that they sent her to the hospital. She described episodes where she struggled to breathe, panting after getting out of the shower or having to catch her breath in order to get dressed in the morning. At the same time, having let her own wellness escape from her priorities, she gained enough weight that her doctor recommended she get back on track. The 15 Day Challenge helped Onwuazor take control of her health.*
Onwuazor began the challenge to pursue her wellness goals, but she continued to complete challenges for fun. As a certified personal trainer, she kept herself active throughout her challenge, warming up by jumping rope 3,000–5,000 times per day and burning additional calories using a box jump. Additionally, she used a time-marked water bottle to help her keep track of her hydration, and she battled her cravings for sweets by eating more fruits. Throughout her journey with TLC, which began two years ago, Onwuazor has lost 25 pounds, seven of which she lost during her most recent 15 Day Challenge from January 16–30.
Not only did Onwuazor commit to the challenge for herself, but she started a team of women in Nigeria, hosting her own contest. She created an accountability group, woke up at 4 or 4:30 in the morning to work out with her team, and encouraged them with prizes for their efforts. Engaging with her team motivated Onwuazor to continue with the challenge, hoping to inspire more women to join her.
As she completed more challenges, Onwuazor’s co-workers noticed a change in her, telling her that she seemed happier. Knowing the struggles she had faced, they told her, “You don’t look like what you’ve been through.” Onwuazor felt the change within herself as well, having seen the results in her body that she’d been working for. “The challenge has helped me lose weight and keep it off,” she said. “I’ve gained my confidence back.”
